William W. “Bill” LeConey Obituary

Rev Dr William W. “Bill” LeConey, formerly of Moorestown, Lumberton and Medford, NJ, died peacefully on June 23 in Hendersonville, Tenn. He was 90 years old.

Born May 18, 1932, in Mt. Holly, NJ to William E. LeConey and Marion L. LeConey, Bill was raised in Moorestown and attended Moorestown High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball, performed as drum major for the school’s marching band, and met his wife of 68 years, Lucia Jane Ridgway. Upon graduating from Moorestown in 1951, Bill attended Lafayette College, following in the (swift) footsteps of his uncle, J. Alfred LeConey, a sprinter and gold medalist in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Following his graduation from Lafayette, Bill attended Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating in 1958, and began a lifelong commitment to his faith and the ministry. Through his more than 50-year association with the American Baptist denomination, he served as senior minister at the First Baptist Church of Allentown, NJ; the First Baptist Church of Bordentown, NJ; Seaview Baptist Church in Linwood, NJ; and the First Baptist Church of West Hartford, Conn. He also served as interim and guest minister for many other churches in South Jersey. Late in his career he served as director of the American Baptist Camp and Conference Center in Lebanon, NJ, and as director of area ministry in North Jersey.

Bill received a masters degree in education from Rutgers University, and a doctorate of ministry from Eastern Baptist (now Palmer) Theological Seminary. He also had a lengthy career in education, serving as chaplain, religion teacher and head baseball coach at the Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, and as a house master, teacher and guidance counselor in the East Windsor (NJ) School District.

Rev. LeConey had a lifelong association with the First Baptist Church of Moorestown, which was built by his great-grandfather, William LeConey, in 1871. Bill and Lucia were married at First Baptist, and, as longtime members, sang in the choir and served on several church committees over the years.

Bill had varied recreational interests, including gardening, golf, coaching Little League baseball, refereeing high school football, attending Philadelphia Orchestra concerts and Walnut Street Theater shows, and vacations with family and friends in Vermont, Florida and the New Jersey shore. He loved to travel, and was an avid sports fan, specifically of the Philadelphia teams, living to see his beloved Phillies win two World Series Championships and his “Iggles” finally capture the Super Bowl.

Bill was dearly loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucia R. LeConey; children Susan L. Koenig (Richard) of Woodbury, Conn.; Stephen P. LeConey (Beth) of Blue Ash, Ohio; Elizabeth L. Brown (George) of Gallatin, Tenn.; William R. LeConey (Linda) of Brattleboro, Vt.; and Rev. Dr. Timothy J. LeConey (Mary) of Bethel, Maine; along with eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
