Wild chase ends with crashes along with drug and assault charges, police say

A 44-year-old Monroe County man sought on felony drug charges was arrested after a chase Wednesday in which he struck three vehicles, including a Pennsylvania State Police cruiser and a local police K-9 unit, Pocono Mountain Regional police report.

Darius Scott, of Coolbaugh Township, faces two sets of charges, one headlined by four counts of felony aggravated assault and the other by three counts of felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, records show. He was being arranged Thursday morning before District Judges Daniel Kresge and Danielle Travagline, records show.

On May 5, a search warrant was served at a home at the 4300 block of Hickory Road in Coolbaugh, Pocono Mountain Regional police said. “Large quantities” of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and cash were recovered along with a firearm, police said. Scott wasn’t home and refused to surrender, police said.

He was sought by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, which brought the drug case; the US Marshals Service and Pocono Mountain Regional police, a news release said.

Patrol officers saw Scott just before noon Wednesday in Mount Pocono and tried to make a traffic stop, the news release said. Scott sped off, hitting a vehicle, driving over road dividers and sidewalks and through parking lots, police said. He drove into Pocono Township and then back into Tobyhanna Township, police said. Scott eventually turned down Summit Avenue, which is a dead end, police said. He turned around and rammed a state police vehicle head-on and also damaged a Pocono Regional K-9 vehicle, police said.

Scott and this 21-year-old passenger were taken into custody after those crashes, the news release said.

“Police were able to observe bulk amounts of heroin within the vehicle,” police said. “No injuries were reported during this event. The vehicle was towed from the scene and police will be applying for a search warrant.”

In the earlier drug case, in addition to the PWI charges, Scott faces three conspiracy counts to do the same — all six charges are ungraded felonies, records show. He also faces three possession counts, three counts of conspiracy to possess drugs as well as charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy to do the same and possession of a firearm when prohibited, records show. His preliminary hearing in that case is tentatively scheduled 10:30 am on June 29, records show.

In the chase case, in addition to the four counts of aggravated assault, he is charged with flight to avoid apprehension, fleeing or eluding a police officer, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, recklessly ending another person and 16 driving offenses, records show. His preliminary hearing in that case is tentatively scheduled 10 am June 30, record say.

Scott was held in the county jail in Lieu of $150,000 bail in the assault case. Bail records had yet to be updated in the drug case.

Court records do not list an attorney for Scott in either case.

The passenger, a resident of Greenville, South Carolina, was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, records show. He was held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled 10:30 am June 30, records show. He is not represented by an attorney, records show.
