From colitis to ‘weird’ weight loss diets, actor Shamita Shetty opens up on her health and fitness journey

From dealing with irritable bowel syndrome and colitis condition to following weird diets for weight loss, actor Shamita Shetty has revealed a number of things related to her health and fitness, recently. Shamita’s revelations have proved how we often experiment with our health without understanding the right way of doing it.

In a candid chat with her sister Shilpa Shetty Kundra on her show Shape of You, Shamita has also revealed her battling depression.

Shamita who made her film debut with Mohabbatein said that her weight loss journey began with her first movie itself. Oblivious of the right weight loss strategy she used to go on weird diets. “Back then, I just wanted to lose weight but had no idea about the correct way of dieting or healthy eating. It took me time to understand what works for my body… You don’t just look good because of workouts, you also feel much better,” she said.

Why is the right method always important when you are trying to lose weight?

It is always advisable to consult an expert when you are planning to make some changes to your health. When it comes to lifestyle changes like weight, people often learn it from their mistakes and experiences.

An 18 year old would never understand the concept of body type. He or she would take up the challenge to look like their favorite celebrity and end up putting their body through hazardous risks like not eating, starving, eating foods that they believe can help lose weight and following fad diets.

In this process, they would not only lose the required weight but would also drain out the stamina from the body which can prove detrimental in the later years of growth.

A fitness enthusiast now, Shamita went on to say that now she understands how every body type is unique and how fitness pattern differs from one individual to another. “Everyone has a different body type. It’s not necessary that what works for me would work for you, too. As I got older, I started realising that whatever I was doing before was not working for my body any more. I had to reinvent my workout. I also got bored of the same type of workout, and the body also stops reacting. It is when you shock the body and introduce a new kind of workout, or introduce a new type of diet, you see a change in your body,” she said.

On how she starts her day, Shamita said, “I start my day with two glasses of warm water because I feel it really gets the organs started for the day ahead. It helps cleanse. Then I have a fruit, and my black tea or coffee.”

On the show, she also revealed of having irritable bowel syndrome and colitis and why she eats gluten free food.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder that affects the large intestine of an individual leading to cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both.

Colitis is a gastrointestinal condition in which inflammation and ulcers are formed in the digestive tract. These ulcers usually occur in the inner lining of the colon and rectum.

Along with physical fitness, Shamita also talked about her mental health. She disclosed being in depression. “Personally speaking, when I went through that phase, I did not even know I was in depression. I could not understand why I behaved or felt in depression. a particular way. I felt lost all the time,” she said.

Saying it to be a continuous battle, Shamita said, “it is not as if you overcome depression and it cannot ever happen again. For me, I have to be aware everyday, I look for signs everyday. I make conscious efforts to not do things that would take me back to it again.”
